Trader Joe’s and Costco Recall Premade Foods Tied to Deadly Listeria Outbreak
In response to a nationwide listeria outbreak, Trader Joe’s and Costco recalled multiple premade food items that may have included cotija cheese contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially life-threatening bacteria.
Listeria is a common bacteria, but the Listeria monocytogenes strain can be dangerous to vulnerable groups like the very young or old and those who are immuno compromised. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant people.
Two people so far have died and 23 have been hospitalized after eating contaminated dairy products tied to the outbreak.
Trader Joe’s recalled the following products:
- Trader Joe’s Chicken Enchiladas Verde (SKU 58292)
- Trader Joe’s Cilantro Salad Dressing (SKU 36420)
- Trader Joe’s Elote Chopped Salad Kit (SKU 74768)
- Trader Joe’s Southwest Salad (SKU 56077)
Costco recalled the following products:
- Southwest Chicken Wrap With Sauce (item #29433) sold between October 27, 2023, and February 6, 2024
- Chicken Street Taco Kit (item #11545) sold between January 25, 2024, and February 6, 2024
- Rojo’s 6 Layer Dip (item #1345308) sold between December 27, 2023, and February 6, 2024
- Don Pancho Cilantro Lime Crema (item #1341779) sold between January 19, 2024, and February 6, 2024
- Don Pancho Crema Trio Pack (item #1796365) sold between January 17, 2024, and February 6, 2024
Both companies said the affected products should be thrown away or returned to the store for a full refund.
Rizo-López has recalled all products made in its facility, including cheese, yogurt, and crema sold nationwide under the following brands:

- Casa Cardenas
- Don Francisco
- Dos Ranchitos
- El Huache
- Food City
- La Ordena
- Rio Grande
- Rizo Bros
- San Carlos
- Santa Maria
- Tio Francisco
- 365 Whole Foods Market
