The Hindi film actress ran for Prime Minister of Canada

Ruby Dhalla, the Indian-origin leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, has announced that she will run for the party leadership and become a potential prime minister of Canada.

Dhalla, who was born to a Punjabi immigrant family living in Canada, was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004. Her first and only film was released shortly before that.

Dhalla, 50, had acted in the Hindi film “Why? Why?” two decades ago. The Bollywood-inspired Hindi film was shot on a low budget. Directed by Vinod Talwar, the film is based on the real-life murder case of Hamilton serial killer Sukhwinder Dhillon.

Ruby played the role of a police officer in the film, which was released in 2003. In 2004, she was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as the Member of Parliament for Brampton, Springdale. She held the position until 2011.

Indian-origin politicians had tried to block the release of the film’s DVD, claiming that they were portrayed in the film’s promotional materials in a misleading manner. However, the filmmakers have denied their allegations.

Ruby Dhalla is the first Indian-origin woman to be elected to the Canadian Parliament, along with Conservative Neena Grewal. She was re-elected to the House of Commons in 2006 and 2008, but was defeated in 2011.

In addition to pursuing her political ambitions, she also became a model and hotelier. She was the runner-up in the Miss India Canada contest in 1993.
