Ten things about Neem to know Karoli Baba, a pioneer of Facebook and Apple,
May 6 | In the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, the Kainchi Dham is a small temple complex on the Kosi riverbanks.
During the town hall meeting that took place this past week, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Steve Jobs had recommended that he go to Neem Karoli Baba’s (Maharajji’s) ashram in Kainchi. This brought the location into the spotlight.
At a difficult time for both him and Facebook, Zuckerberg visited the ashram. The Facebook founder was only scheduled to remain here for one day and had only brought a book with him. Instead, he stayed for two days.
Together with his friend Dan Kottke, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs traveled to the ashram to meet Neem Karoli Baba. However, Baba had passed away prior to his arrival, so he was unable to meet him.

The Ashram receives a lot of foreign visitors. Among his followers are spiritual luminaries Ma Jaya, Ram Dass, musicians Jai Uttal and Krishna Das, philanthropist Larry Brilliant, academic and author Yvette Rosser, and Daniel Goleman.
1. Neem Karoli Baba was born to a Brahmin family in the Uttar Pradesh village of Akbarpur in the Firozabad district.
2. Neem Karoli Baba wed a Brahmin woman when he was only 11 years old. He left his house soon after getting married, becoming a sadhu who traveled all throughout India and went by numerous identities.
3. It’s thought that Neem Karoli Baba knew everything by the time he was 17 years old.
4. His father received word that his son had been seen someplace in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, after 10 to 15 years. His father quickly sped to the area and gave him the go-ahead to go back to the house and stay with the family. Baba has a daughter and two boys. Neem Karoli Baba kept himself busy with social service while he was at home.
5. Around the spot in Kainchi village where Sadhu Premi Baba and Sombari Maharaj had conducted Yagyas, Baba Neem Karoli built a chabootara in 1962.
6. He also constructed numerous temples for Lord Hanuman. On June 15, 1964, Lord Hanuman’s first temple was officially opened. In Vrindavan, the second temple was constructed.
7. Baba Karoli Baba has temples all over the world, including one in Texas and another in Lucknow. His website claims that Maharajji founded at least 108 temples.
8. Hundreds of Westerners visited Neem Karoli Baba for darshan in the late 1960s thanks to publications written by an American by the name of Baba Ram Dass.
9. Neem Karoli Baba chose the area in Vrindavan for his Samadhi. On September 10, 1973, he perished. At the Ashram, a temple was subsequently constructed in his honor. Dedicated on June 15, 1976, his statue.
10. Prior approval is required for anyone who want to visit the ashram in Kainchi village. One may stay for three days with the approval of one of the more seasoned devotees. Due to the extreme cold there, the ashram is closed for a significant portion of the year.
