Robert Downey Jr. confirms his return to MCU, but not as Iron Man, to play Marvel villain Dr. Doom.
Robert Downey Jr. has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villainous Doctor Doom in two upcoming films: “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” These films are set to hit theaters in May 2026 and May 2027, respectively.
Downey Jr. made the announcement during Marvel’s panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. He will be directed by the talented Russo brothers, who have previously helmed movies like “Avengers: Infinity War,””Avengers: Endgame,”and the”Captain America”films”The Winter Soldier”and”Civil War.”The event began with a dramatic introduction of Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. On stage, there were men dressed in olive robes and wearing metal masks resembling Doctor Doom’s. Joe Russo stated,”If we’re going to bring Doctor Doom to the screen — he is one of the most complex and entertaining characters in all of fiction.”He added,”If we’re going to do this… then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world for the role. As proof of the unimaginable possibilities of the Marvel Universe, we give you the one person who could play Victor von Doom…”
Then, one of the masked individuals stepped forward and removed their mask, revealing none other than Robert Downey Jr.! This unexpected reveal left the crowd in a state of excitement and admiration for the talented actor.
The Russos also talked about directing four MCU films in the past. “That four-movie run was incredible,” said Anthony Russo. “And it left us really drained, with all our emotions on the floor. But then, through a very special story, Joe and I discovered a potential path forward with you all,” he added.
