L.A. Area Emmy Winners 2023: Telemundo KVEA Sweeps Newscast Categories

Telemundo KVEA

Undoubtedly, KVEA is doing something right. In a duopoly with sister NBC outlet KNBC, the Telemundo-owned Los Angeles station swept this year’s major newscast categories at the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards. With wins for its evening (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.), daytime (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and morning (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.) newscasts, the Spanish-language station dominated the evening.

The daytime newscast Emmy was also won by KVEA the previous year (while KTLA won evening, and KNBC won morning, in 2022).

Telemundo KVEA

KVEA and nearby public broadcaster KCET both received eight L.A. Area Emmys this year. (That was also more than the six KCET received last year.) Given the tie with KVEA, KCET’s streak of winning the most awards for the seventh consecutive year is still intact.

The KCBS/KCAL duopoly came in second with four victories, followed by the ABC-owned KABC and cable network Spectrum SportsNet LA with three each.

With 24, KCET received the most Emmy nominations in the Los Angeles area this year. KVEA came next with 20 followed by Spectrum News 1 on cable news with 14.

Former Lakers basketball player Robert Horry gave Los Angeles Lakers broadcast analyst Stu Lantz the 2023 Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award. An “individual, business, or organisation that has made a significant contribution to television broadcasting in the greater Los Angeles area” is given the award each year.

The L.A. Area Emmy Awards’ 2019 eligibility period ran from January 1 through December 31, 2022. In the categories of crime and social issues, culture and history, the arts, human interest, sports, the environment, and live and breaking news coverage, the Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards honour regionally produced programming.

Michaela Pereira, a journalist, hosted the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards presentation on Saturday night at the Four Seasons Hotel Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills. Bob Bain and Bob Bain Productions organised this year’s awards ceremony. The complete list of this year’s nominees can be found here; the winners are listed below:
