In spite of the fact that the company ultimately only unveiled one of them, the Pixel Fold, rumors that Google was developing not just one but two foldable smartphones in recent months (and years) turned out to be accurate. It appears that the same team behind the Pixel Fold also worked on another foldable smartphone. It appears that this other device “wasn’t good enough,” which is why it was ultimately scrapped and never brought to market. The group believed that only devices that are adequate or superior to those already in use should be released.
Unfortunately, there are no additional details about this device in this confessional-style recording that was included in Google’s official Made by Google podcast. Therefore, we are unsure if it had the exact same form factor as the Pixel Fold or if it chose to adopt a “flip” design strategy instead. We may never know, but the important thing is that the development team for the search engine giant believed the Pixel Fold to be the superior product of the two, which is why it survived and the other one perished.
