Achievements of Women’s Asia Cup: Experience of competing against big teams
In the ACC Women’s Asia Cup 2024 held in Sri Lanka, Nepal was eliminated from Group A with 2 points in third place. Nepal, which started well by defeating UAE by 6 wickets, lost to Pakistan by 9 wickets and India by 82 runs.
More than the results against the two Test teams, Nepal is happy with the learning. Nepal scored 108 runs against Pakistan after losing 6 wickets in 20 overs. Pakistan achieved the target by losing 1 wicket in 11.5 overs. When India set a target of 179 runs, Nepal scored 96 runs losing 9 wickets in 20 overs.
This competition was an opportunity for us to learn. Captain Indu Burma said after returning to Nepal on Thursday that they learned how to face the strength of India and Pakistan and play without panic.
This is Nepal’s third participation in the Asia Cup. Earlier, in 2012, Nepal played three matches and in 2016, Nepal was winless. Nepal’s first win in Women’s Asia Cup was against UAE. Because of that, the players were more happy and excited.
We needed a win against UAE. The goal was to reach the semi-finals while giving a good challenge to Pakistan. But that could not happen. We have tried our best, Indu said. She added, it looks like we have to work harder. It seems that a lot of work needs to be done in batting, bowling and fitness. We have learned a lot from the Asia Cup”, said Indu.
Nepal’s fielding was not good against India and Pakistan. One of the reasons for that was playing under flood lights. Playing under flood lights for the first time is not easy for any player. But Indu says that poor fielding is not due to floodlights.
